Markets end lower on jobs data

US stocks fell after a weak reading on the labour market dropped stocks through a key technical level, validating the worries of those who thought the recent rally was flimsy.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 76.8 points, or 0.7 percent, at 10,662.42. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 9.4 points, or 0.8 percent, at 1,124.83. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 7.4 points, or 0.3 percent, at 2,327.08.

European shares ended slightly weaker, although off lows after a recovery in US homes sales from a 13-year trough buoyed sentiment.

The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 ended down 0.1 percent at 1,065.92 points, extending losses from the previous session when it ended down 1.5 percent, and in line with a little-changed Wall Street.

Japan's Nikkei is not operating today due to a national holiday.
