Inflation in Argentine provinces revealed yesterday by Argentine Statistics and Census Institute (INDEC) did not surprise at all: it hit 0.8 per cent, just like that reported for Buenos Aires city and the suburbs. Makeup has been federalized. However, the matter is not as simple as that. Argentine Internal Trade Secretary, Guillermo Moreno, intervened in Mendoza data again, also scoring 0.8 per cent. Officials from that Argentine province warned that the real figure hit twice as much. The truth is that the promised reform of INDEC is every day farther away. What's more, fully knowing that real inflation will continue really high in 2008, heading towards an already-worrying 30 per cent, there are no incentives to eliminate official touches. Telling the truth is getting increasingly harder.
