New Argentine president Cristina de Kirchner spent yesterday almost the entire day receiving foreign heads of state and chief aides.

However, at the same time, domestic matters started to get worse. In the first place, clash with dairy farmers for fixed milk price set by Internal Trade Secretary Guillermo Moreno resulted in plant blockade in Santa Fe and Entre Ríos. Farmers did not let trucks through and they might extend this protest to Buenos Aires. They even promise to distribute milk for free in supermarkets.

In parallel, a difficult salary negotiation with unions is approaching. Next week, an employers and employees meeting will be held with bus drivers, who demand a higher-than-30-per cent rise for 2008.

The inheritance Cristina receives is not that promising and she has little time to put these matters onto the rails, since as days go by, they grow stronger.
